Morrisons has spent a lot of time in the news recently and not always for good reasons. It has been the topic on many vegan forums and groups that we follow regarding its Morrisons red tractor assurance policy that it introduced to its stores. The Morrisons red tractor assurance policy as stated on Morrisons official website reads:

You’ve probably seen the Red Tractor Standard stamp if you’ve ever been down the meat isle in many supermarkets not just Morrisons, it comprises of a little red tractor with blue wheels and the Union Jack flag in the background. The new standard was launched nineteen years ago now in 2000 as customers started to get more aware and conscious about where their meat was coming from so that they could offer their consumers full confidence that any pork, beef, lamb, poultry or milk which is UK sourced has been farmed to some of the most ‘comprehensive and respected standards’ anywhere in the world.  They also claim that each and every stage of the process is regularly checked by independent expert auditors.

Morrisons also claim to have additional measures that they look at in addition to Red Tractor Standards and that these help the supermarket chain to develop high standards of animal health and welfare. They also specifically list an example of their additional measures as checks which they carry out on all farmers that supply pork to their stores to “assure standards of heath, safety and welfare for the staff and livestock on the farms we buy from”. We knew about a organisation called Virtue For Animals who have been looking into these farms themselves and claim to have discovered a number of instances where the farms that supply Morrison’s with pork are not conforming with the Red Tractor Assurance policy especially one called Moss Rose Piggeries in Blackpool which has 1.3 stars out of 5 on google.

Virtue For Animals was founded in 2018 with the aim of helping to educate and inspire members of the public look closer at the treatment of animals in the meat industry and to try and bring people closer to a more peaceful and vegan world. Meat The Victims stormed the farm in order to highlight the mistreatment of the animals and the potential DEFRA violations as well as Red Tractor Violations present within the farm. During their investigation of the farm is became clear that Moss Rose Piggery did not care about any of their animals.

Red Tractor Guidelines state that “Pigs must have permanent access to environmental enrichment in order to satisfy their investigation and manipulation behavioural requirements. Examples of environmental enrichment include straw, hay, wood, sawdust, peat. Chains alone are not acceptable.” as you can see from the picture above the pigs have no environmental enrichment except a chain which hung from the wall, Virtue also stated that some pens did not even have this but instead only features a few links hanging from the side wall however they were unsure if they were meant for enrichment or another purpose unknown to them.

They also found that cockroaches where everywhere, The Pig Site is a knowledge hub for all pig farmers as well as those who want to learn about the keeping and safety of pigs. It states that control of insects on a piggery is one of the most important requirements due to cockroaches being able to transmit diseases which include Swine Dysentery (Brachyspira hyodysenteriae) and PCV2, which is ranked one of the “top three infectious agents in the swine industry”. They took all their findings to samantha trick who is the livestock and farming development manager for Morrison supermarkets plc and she responded to say that Livestock technical auditor to visit Moss Rose to look into their concerns.
