One of the largest meat suppliers in the world announced yesterday that they are going to start producing plant-based products as a step to help save the environment. The company Danish Crown is probably not one you have ever heard of before as in the UK they are called ‘Tulip‘ which I’m sure rings some bells with a few of you.

Danish Crown

Tulip is recognized as the UK arm of the Danish Crown family, thanks to the rise in veganism Tulip hasn’t been doing too well in recent years as they announced job losses in 2018 after under performing and then again recently in January 2019 when they announced they would be cutting another 300 – 400 jobs due to further performance issues.

They were hoping the job cuts would save them approximately £41 million for this financial year as part of a cost savings programme however it did not specify where the cuts would be leaving hundreds of their workers in the dark, they later released that Tulip would be facing most of the cuts though.

Danish Crown

For the 2017 – 2018 financial year Tulip posted an annual loss of £31 and a following a £27.4 million loss last year.

Tulip blamed the losses on competitiveness in the UK saying that costs were too high and although they were getting new contracts they needed to look to save money.

Even though the CEO Mr Valeur didn’t directly say that there was any correlation between the losses in the UK market and the rise of veganism in the UK we couldn’t help but notice as veganism in the UK rises their grip on the UK market loosens.

Danish Crown may have noticed this too and changed its tactic in order to try and gain support from the every growing movement of veganism. In the year of veganism companies that sell meat or dairy are struggling to keep their heads high and not succumb to pressure of the move towards plant-based foods.

Danish Crown announced that they will be producing plant-based beef burgers which we think its great to hear they’re looking into this but from a company that has relied on the suffering and killing of innocent animals its rather a small announcement especially after making such a substantial loss for the last two years running.

We were hoping for a larger offering from the company seeing as they are one of the largest suppliers of meat in the world. Other companies who have made a loss have made some big announcements such as Danone who have opened the largest vegan yogurt plant in the US after its $55 million loss in 2018.
